Cougars and Coach Fisher chase the school’s first GGCL title in two decades

After a breakout 2024–25 campaign that saw Mount Notre Dame rack up nine match wins and three top-ten tournament finishes, second-year head coach Sophia Fischer is setting her sights even higher. The Cougars are primed to make noise in the Girls Greater Catholic League and could capture their first league title since 2004–05.

“The biggest milestone possible this season would be winning the GGCL title,” Fischer said. “It’s been twenty years, and this group is hungry to bring it home. I also expect this team to come away with a tournament win this year.”

Fischer and assistant coach Ed Fischer return a core group that blends leadership, experience, and infectious energy. Senior Meadow Johns headlines the roster after finishing last season as the team’s second-highest average bowler. “She was thrown into the anchor spot on occasion last year to prepare her for a bigger role,” Fischer explained. She’ll be joined by returning varsity standouts Kailey Rose, Kailey Fitzharris, and Rebelynn Weisbrod, a trio Fischer credits for keeping team morale high and pushing through “the hard stuff.”

New varsity bowlers Brooke Tompkins and Haven Van Harn are expected to make an immediate impact. Tompkins gained valuable experience traveling with varsity last season and made major strides over the offseason, while Van Harn earned a promotion after being called up from JV before the postseason.

Fischer identifies communication and energy as the team’s biggest assets. “The girls were introduced to lane communication last season,” she said. “They took it and ran. They’re constantly telling each other and me what they’re seeing and feeling.” The main focus this year will be improving consistency across all frames.

The Cougars’ schedule features several anticipated conference battles, including matchups with Seton, Mercy McAuley, and Oak Hills—programs Fischer calls “tough teams where the girls truly grow.” MND is also eager to return to the Lance Baker Bash and the Holiday Classic, where they finished in the top ten last year and are aiming for a top-five finish or a tournament win.
